How was Fr. Emil Kapaun chosen as name?
When the council was organized on October 20, 1953, it was known as the Westchester Council. Soon afterward, the Council voted among three different nominations for a new name (nobody seems to remember the other two). "Fr. Emil Kapaun" was chosen due to a recent article on his life that appeared in the newspaper. (There is a clipping of a Westchester newspaper's story on Fr. Kapaun in the Council's archives that dates from this time.) Subsequently, a letter was sent to Bishop Carrol in Wichita, Kansas Dec. 9, 1953 informing him of the decision.
