Alexandria House
The first pillar of the Knights of Columbus is Charity, and every fall Council #3744 identifies a charitable project with the specific goal of sharing the joy of Christmas with a deserving family in need. In 2014 we were introduced to Sister Judy Vaughn at Alexandria House (CLICK HERE for their website), and our council has supported the incredible venture she started ever since. Sister Judy transitioned from her role as executive director of Alexandria House after Marissa Espinoza took over leadership in July 2022, but remains an affiliate member of its executive board.
Founded in 1996, Alexandria House is a non-profit transitional residence and house of hospitality and hope that provides safe and supportive housing for women and children in the process of moving from emergency shelter to permanent housing. Located in the densely populated and ethnically diverse Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles, Alexandria House also serves its broader neighborhood community by providing educational and enrichment opportunities for residents and neighbors alike, not to mention a free local food pantry and community fridge program available to them all.
The "Alexandria House" complex is comprised of two main houses in front, and a 39-unit residential apartment building in back, the latter of which was purchased in December 2021. The Yellow House has the living areas, offices, school, kitchen and dining rooms, while the Green House includes bedrooms and bathrooms for residents. The houses are situated next to each other and are beautiful Victorian structures, built in the 1920's, located on the east side of Koreatown near Downtown Los Angeles.
Each year, Council #3744 has been able to meet our goal of providing a family with some essential items needed to make the move to their own apartment. We also provide a check to Alexandria House for their teachers/volunteers-operated elementary school. We will again be raising donations to support Alexandria House this year, as well as making it a happy Christmas for one particular family. Music superstar Justin Bieber decided Alexandria House is such a worthy and wonderful place that he made a new video called "Intentions." It features the Alexandria House, some of the Mothers living there, and their Children. It also shows Sr. Judy, the former executive director who started Alexandria House through her charitable vision, hard work, and Catholic Church faith. Thanks to Alexandria House, Mothers & Children in distress are able to move on from an existence of constant crisis to lives of stability and hope.
Justin Bieber gave an initial donation of $200,000 dollars through his new campaign called "Intentions" to help and support Alexandria House. He also bought a new car for one of the mothers getting ready to move out with her children into Section 8 Public Housing Home Ownership. She had a new job at the time, but no means of transportation. What a wonderful opportunity for her, Alexandria House, and all of the people living there. We hope you will join Justin and Council #3744 as supporters of Sister Judy’s legacy.
